Buddhism will get the ball rolling

the primary stone architecture in India used to be rock cut and finished by Buddhist monks; prior to those buildings, all structure had been fabricated from wooden. Essentially the most spectacular examples were rock-reduce devout sanctuaries, excavated straight out of the basalt mountains lining the western edge of the Deccan Plateau, the multiplied, v-shaped landmass that comprises many of the Indian peninsula. The caves at Ajanta – as well as these at regional Bedsa, Bhaja, Karla, Kondane, Nashik, and Pitalkhora – have been a part of this initial wave of excavations.
